There is a demand for about 5,000 driving licenses across the country every day. According to the Department of Transport Management, licenses are yet to be distributed to about 2.5 million service recipients who have applied earlier.

Rajiv Pokharel, Director General of the department, said that licenses are being distributed by giving priority to those who are in urgent need. He said, 'There is a demand for 5,000 licenses every day. Licenses are yet to be given to 2.5 million who have applied earlier. Now, licenses are being given to those who need them immediately.'

According to him, currently, about 600 people reach the department every day to get licenses saying 'emergency'. 'Today, 600 people come to get licenses saying 'emergency' every day and the distribution is also being done in the same proportion,' he said.

After applying online or physically, the license details are sent to the security printing press. According to Pokharel, 'The license is printed within 5-7 days after sending the data. The license is distributed after it arrives.'

The department has given priority to the digital medium to solve the problem of license shortage. He said, 'The license can be shown through the Citizen app. Traffic has also recognized it. If traffic rules are violated, a ticket can be issued based on the same license and the fine can be paid online.'

He added, 'Now there is no need to carry a license or receipt, just a mobile phone will suffice.'

He informed that about 250,000 licenses were destroyed in a fire that broke out in the department during the Gen-G movement. The department was at the center of the movement because it was located near the parliament building. 'Even though the department was completely damaged, we have worked hard to revive the data of 6 million licenses,' he said.

After the license printing machine burned during the movement, the printing work has been moved forward by signing an agreement with the Security Printing Press, Banepa. 'In the first phase, 1.2 million licenses are being printed and distributed. Gradually, everyone will get a license, '  he said.

Director General Pokharel says that the problem related to licenses is not as serious as before due to the increased use of digital licenses.
