The Press Council Nepal has appealed to the media, journalists and social media users to strictly follow the election code of conduct during the silence period for the House of Representatives elections. The council has stated that the time for parties and candidates to campaign for the House of Representatives elections to be held on 21 Falgun is only until 12 midnight tonight and then the silence period (fixed time) will begin. The council has reminded that as per Section 25(5) of the Election Code of Conduct, 2082, news, articles, analysis, interviews, comments and promotional materials that influence the favor or opposition of a political party or candidate are not allowed to be published/broadcast from 48 hours before the day of voting until the polling station closes.

The Council has urged not to publish or broadcast any kind of promotional content related to political parties and candidates, news of meetings and conferences, photos, materials with election symbols, audio-visual materials, etc. during the silent period.

The Council has stated that if the code of conduct is violated during the silent period, action will be taken as per the Journalist Code of Conduct, 2073 (First Amendment 2076) and the Election Code of Conduct, 2082. It has also warned that violations of the code of conduct may form the basis for the media's documentation, classification and public welfare advertisement recommendation process.

The Council has urged all media outlets, journalists, media workers and social media users to be more sensitive, aware and responsible during the silent period of the election and follow the code of conduct.
