The Press Council Nepal has expressed serious concern over the dissemination of misleading and malicious content through social media targeting the House of Representatives elections to be held on March 21. The council issued a press release on Thursday, stating that disparaging, defamatory, insulting, false, misleading and malicious information is being disseminated against political parties and candidates participating in the elections, especially through YouTube channels, Facebook pages and reels, which are not registered/recorded as per the law as media outlets. The council says that such activities will negatively impact the fairness of the elections. It is said that a letter has been sent to the Election Commission for monitoring and action after complaints were received about such social media. The press release states that serious violations of the prevailing election code of conduct were found through unregistered networks.
The Council has put such networks on notice and instructed them to suspend content that violates the code of conduct, register and archive it as per the rules, and disseminate content within the scope of the law, code of conduct, and professional values.
The Council has also clarified that it has written to the Nepal Police and Cyber Bureau, among other agencies, for investigation and action against those who rebroadcast content in violation.
