Kathmandu has become the third most polluted city in the world. As per the record on Friday afternoon, the Air Quality Index (AQI) of Kathmandu Valley has reached 159.

This level falls in the ‘unhealthy for everyone’ category. This level of pollution can especially affect children, senior citizens, as well as respiratory and heart patients. 

According to the AQI, Hanoi in Vietnam is the most polluted city. Where the air pollution level is 165, the second most polluted city in the world is Lahore in Pakistan. As per the record on Friday afternoon, the pollution level here is 162.

According to the AQI criteria, zero to 50 is classified as ‘good’ (green signal), 51 to 100 as ‘be alert’ (yellow signal), and 101 to 150 as ‘unhealthy’. Experts say that unhealthy levels can especially affect respiratory and heart patients. 151 to 200 is considered 'unhealthy for everyone', 201 to 300 is 'very unhealthy' and above 300 is 'extremely dangerous'.
