What are the two extremist tendencies that Dahal has seen in the election race?

What you should know

Nepali Communist Party Coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal has said that he has been fighting against the extremist tendency that suppressed the Gen-G movement on Bhada 23 and sabotaged Bhada 24.

A week before the election of the House of Representatives, Dahal held a press conference at the central office, Parisdanda, on Thursday and called the then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who suppressed the Gen-G movement, and the elements that infiltrated on Bhada 24, extremist tendencies.

‘An extremist tendency that brutally killed the youth on Bhada 23 is arrogance, conceit. The tendency that was seen to protect corruption and forcibly suppress the voices of the youth with the arrogance of saying that there is a two-thirds majority, that tendency of arrogance and conceit is still present in this election process. That tendency is not ready to introspect yet,’ he said, ‘Another extremist tendency has emerged. On Bhadra 24, they infiltrated the Gen-G movement and abducted it, burning down all the landmarks of the country, from Singha Durbar to the Supreme Court, the Parliament building, the police office, the party offices of the parties that fought for democracy and republic, and the residences of the leaders. We have been fighting against these two extremist tendencies since the beginning.'

He urged voters to stand against the then ruling coalition and the Bhadra 24 trend. 'These are not the tendencies of the Nepali people, they are extremist tendencies that have been combined with various maneuvers against the independence of the Nepali nation and the right of the Nepali people to self-determination,' he added. 'Today, these two extremist tendencies are also in the election process, and these two extremist tendencies are wrong. The Nepali Communist Party has been continuously raising its voice from the beginning that we should maintain national unity and further secure and strengthen the independence of the nation, and that the wishes of the people and the voices of the Gen-G youth should also be addressed.’

He pointed to the UML and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) without naming the two extremist tendencies. He claimed that the NCP was moving forward with the right tendency. ‘In this way, there is a competition between three tendencies in this election. Now the time has come for the Nepali people to make a decision,’ he said. ‘The important question before the Nepali people is whether they will support extremism that kills the youth, extremism that burns the country, various types of reactionary movements, or support the Nepali Communist Party that stands in favor of the nation, in favor of independence, in favor of change, and in favor of amending and revising the constitution, and in favor of the legitimate demands of the Gen-G youth.’

He urged his party, which carries history, to win, as the country will suffer if the extremist tendency wins the election. ‘I have said in policy and principle that if the extremist tendency wins, the country may suffer,’ he said, ‘If the tendency to raise its voice in the interest of the nation and the people, democracy and the republic and make history for it yesterday wins, it may be easy, this is our thinking.’

Along with this, he claimed that no one would get a majority in this election and said that even if there is a ‘hung parliament’, we should work in the interest of the country.

‘The main competition is between these four parties, the Nepali Communist Party, the Nepali Congress, the CPN-UML and the National Independent Party,’ he said,  ‘I have already said that there is no situation where anyone will get a majority.’ Dahal expressed dissatisfaction saying that the commission formed to investigate the incidents of Bhadra 23 and 24 did not submit its report on time.

‘The commission’s report should have been submitted on time. It was postponed once. That is acceptable. "It can be said that it happened once or twice, but it is wrong to bring the report three times and now even after the election," he said. "The commission should have found the culprits guilty and taken the action forward. Whoever it is, it is absolutely wrong to be slow to bring the report, to keep postponing the time, and to bring it after the election."
