The Supreme Court has issued an eight-point directive on the issue of equality in service benefits, pension and social security for former Gurkha soldiers.

The full text of the case filed by Bhim Bahadur Limbu Tawa, coordinator of the British Gurkha Satyagraha Sangharsh Samiti Nepal, which was made public only on Thursday, has ordered further initiatives for result-oriented talks with the British government on the problems of former Gurkha soldiers through high-level diplomatic channels.

On February 13, 2002, a bench of Justices Hari Prasad Phuyal and Mahesh Sharma Poudel ruled to dismiss the writ petition, stating that Gurkha soldiers, who have been serving in the British Army for two centuries, have to endure unequal treatment to this day.

‘This bench has drawn serious attention to the fact that even after almost 210 years since the commencement of Gorkha recruitment, a situation has arisen where former Gorkha soldiers are being deprived of their rights,’ the full text of the judgment states. ‘Therefore, keeping in mind the sensitivity and urgency of the subject matter of the writ petition, the concerned body should take necessary initiatives in this regard as soon as possible.’
