Saudi Arabian security forces have arrested more than 19,000 undocumented migrant workers in a single week.
According to the Saudi Ministry of Interior, they were arrested during a joint investigation campaign from February 12 to 18. Saudi Arabia has recently intensified its campaign to arrest undocumented workers.
According to the information released by the Ministry of Interior, the largest number of those arrested are more than 12,000 workers with expired residence visas. Similarly, 4,000 are violating border security rules and about 3,000 are violating labor laws. More than 14,000 workers have been 'deported' within a week of those arrested.
More than 15,000 migrant workers have been sent to their embassies to obtain travel documents. According to the Nepali Embassy, the number of Nepalis living in Saudi Arabia without documents is less than in other countries. The Ministry of Interior has warned that those who help bring people illegally, allow them to stay, or employ them can be sentenced to 15 years in prison and fined up to 1 million Saudi riyals.
