US has no role in any democratic country's protests or movements: Robert York

Robert York, regional affairs director at the American think tank Pacific Forum, has made it clear that the US has no role in any movement or demonstration in any democratic country.

Speaking at the third session of the second day of the Kantipur Conclave, 'Nepal in the tug of war', he said, 'The democratic movements or demonstrations in Ukraine, Hong Kong, Bangladesh or Nepal were not created by the US. The citizens of those societies raised their voices and demanded change. The US does not want to take credit for those movements.'

He said that it is extremely important to create a suitable environment for the government that comes after the upcoming elections to learn best practices, new technologies and modern technology. 'Effective policies should be adopted and investment should be made in the youth, so that they can gain skills and work experience. A competent civil service and a good policy framework are necessary for sustainable economic growth,' he said. 'This is evident in the success stories of many so-called 'miracle economies'. Successful countries at different times have focused on learning, adapting and strengthening institutions.'

He also suggested looking at the future of their country and investing in it. 'Ultimately, the responsibility for development and democracy lies within every country,' he said.
