Confusion spreads saying 'Balendra Shah's office in Jhapa vandalized'

What you should know

The administration has initiated legal action in the incident of spreading confusion on social media using 'artificial intelligence', alleging that the liaison office of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) candidate Balendra Shah in Kamal Rural Municipality, Jhapa, suffered major damage.

The District Administration Office, Jhapa, issued a notice on Friday and drew the attention of the concerned bodies to identify the individuals and groups who distorted the actual incident and published misleading news and photos and take action.

According to the administration, a simple stone was pelted on the house where Balen Shah's liaison office is located in Kamal Rural Municipality-2, Campa Bazaar under Jhapa Area No. 5 on Magh 21 at around 12:15 pm. The administration has clarified that only one glass of the window of the owner's living room was broken in the incident.

However, the administration says that it has been found that AI technology has been misused to create pictures that make it look like the office has been destroyed and made viral on social media.

‘It has been found that misleading information has been spread on social media by creating a picture that appears to be a serious act of vandalism, different from the actual incident,’ the notice signed by Assistant Chief District Officer Tej Prakash Prasai states, ‘A letter has been sent to the concerned body to identify such individuals or groups and take action.’

The Election Code of Conduct Monitoring Officer has also shown interest in this matter and warned that action will be taken as per the prevailing law. The Jhapa administration has urged social media users not to share unverified and misleading content.

The administration has made public both the ‘real picture’ and the ‘picture used to spread confusion’, appealing to the general public to be aware of such information.
