The Third International Buddhist Conference is to be held in Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, on April 16 and 17.

The Lumbini Development Fund Council meeting held in Kathmandu on Thursday decided to hold a conference to highlight the spirituality of Lumbini and make it a tourist destination.

The meeting chaired by Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation and Lumbini Development Fund Chairman Anil Kumar Sinha has formed a main organizing committee for the conference.

A 10-member main organizing committee has been formed under the coordination of Lumbini Development Fund Vice-Chairman Lharkyal Lama. The government has allocated Rs 30 million for this.

The conference, which was scheduled to be held last November, could not be held due to the political situation in the country, so preparations have been made to hold it in Lumbini on the occasion of the 2570th Buddha Jayanti on Baisakh 16 and 17 (April 29-30).

Buddhist scholars, monks, nuns, gurus and lamagurus from more than 40 countries of the world will participate. The two-day conference will feature discussions, debates, and presentations on Buddhist sites including Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, the ancient capital of the Shakya dynasty, Kapilvastu, and Ramgram.

The first International Buddhist Summit was held in Lumbini in 1998 and the second in 2004.
