Prime Minister Sushila Karki has said that the health insurance program should be continued at all costs.

In a discussion with the Health Insurance Board, she stated that the government has the responsibility to provide health care to the needy citizens.

Executive Director of the Board, Krishna Prasad Poudel, had shared the data that the Board has been providing free health care services to 1.6 million citizens. He had complained that the Board was lacking funds while providing free insurance to the poor, disabled, and senior citizens.

In response, Prime Minister Karki said that the Health Insurance Program had received information that it was in financial crisis and that it should be operated even if it took loans. 'If there is a famine, we should avert famine by selling children's earrings, jewelry, and utensils,' she said. 'Health insurance has also become like that. It should be improved. We should also discuss the issue with the Finance Minister and find a solution.' She said that Finance Minister Rameshwor Khanal is out of Kathmandu and will discuss it as soon as he returns. 'Health insurance should not be a business for some people. I have also heard that there are irregularities in it.' There should be rules . Arrangements should also be made for the poor to get free facilities .’

She directed to make arrangements for operating services through a single-door system to eliminate the shortcomings in health insurance . ‘When it comes to insurance, it should also be like insurance . How can that be made . The Ministry of Health should do it,’ she said, ‘Free medicines distributed in government hospitals rot and go to waste . On the other hand, insured patients do not get medicines . This situation should end .’ She directed to prevent misuse by those with access to free health care even though poor citizens are provided with free health care .
