The Election Commission has informed that action has been taken against candidates, various organizations and individuals who violated the code of conduct based on complaints received by the Central Code of Conduct Approval Committee of the Election Commission.
The commission has said that it has asked political parties and candidates for clarification on 21 complaints received by the committee so far. Election Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai also said that responses have been received regarding 12 complaints.
The commission has said that action will be taken against those violating the code of conduct as per the law. ‘In cases of code of conduct violations, the commission takes action as per the law. There is a provision in the law that no action should be taken without giving anyone a chance to explain themselves. The commission asks for clarification, and sometimes there are inquiries or complaints that it will not take action, but that is not the case. If the code of conduct is violated intentionally, the commission takes action,’ said spokesperson Bhattarai.
Bhattarai informed that 120 ‘content’ received through social media and electronic means regarding the election have been sent to the Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police for action as per the Electronic Transactions Act, 2063. Similarly, he said that 6 complaints have been sent to the Telecommunications Authority for action under the Telecommunications Authority Act, 2052 and 15 complaints have been sent to the Press Council for action as per the Press Council Act, 2048.
