3,000 election police officers selected for security in the upcoming House of Representatives elections have been absent from basic training.

Out of the 133,980 election police officers selected for a 40-day period of service under the Nepal Police, 2,995 did not participate in the election-focused basic training and follow-up that began on Sunday. Some of the absentees have informed that they will be present at the designated unit within a few days, citing the reason for having to participate in the written examination for police constables. However, the rest have remained absent without giving any information.

133,980 election police officers were selected under the Nepal Police and 15,110 under the Armed Police for the House of Representatives elections to be held on 21 Falgun. The basic training of the selected officers has already started on Sunday. The Nepal Police is preparing to deploy them in the field from next week after providing training through all 77 District Police Offices and subordinate units and the Armed Police through the district-based battalions/combatants.

According to the Police Headquarters, among those selected to be deployed under the Nepal Police, 508 from Koshi Province, 617 from Madhes, 643 from Bagmati, 608 from Gandaki, 189 from Lumbini, 89 from Karnali, 167 from Sudurpaschim and 174 from the Valley (Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur) have not participated in the training.

The 'Election Police Recruitment and Deployment Guidelines' issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs earlier provides that election police officers will be provided with remuneration, uniform allowance, ration, transportation expenses and four days' lunch expenses similar to those of police personnel. It is mentioned that they will be dismissed from the concerned police office after the 40-day period ends.

The government has decided to deploy about 190,000 security personnel from the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and National Investigation Department for election security. In addition, 149,090 election police have been selected for 40 days.
