Corruption case filed against Nepal Reinsurance Company Chairman Poudel

A corruption case has been filed against Surendra Kumar Poudel, chairman of Nepal Reinsurance Company.

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) filed a case against Poudel and eight others in a special court on Sunday on charges of corruption while he was the general manager of Udayapur Cement Company. On 20 Bhadra 2082, Poudel was appointed as the chairman of the reinsurance company for a period of 4 years by the then Finance Minister Bishnu Poudel. A claim of Rs 124.722 million and 11 paisa has been made against Poudel, along with a fine and imprisonment. According to special court spokesperson Krishna Sharan Lamichhane, a case has been filed against the then acting general manager of the cement company, Nawal Kishore Sah, the then deputy general manager Mahesh Prasad Kafle, the head of the production division Sanjay Kumar Lal, the head of the warehouse division Mahesh Prasad Kafle, the head of the production department Ravichandra Poudel, the head of the cement production division Hari Prasad Adhikari and the head of the sales department Ram Bahadur BC. The CIAA has claimed a compensation of Rs 465.274 million against the then acting deputy general manager Sah and Rs 126.369 million against Kafle. Similarly, the CIAA has also claimed a compensation of Rs 465.274 million each against Lal, Sah, Adhikari and GC and has demanded a fine and imprisonment as per the compensation. The CIAA has claimed that the defendants have embezzled government property and caused damage to the government. The charge sheet has been filed against the defendants by fixing different compensation amounts, informed the court spokesperson Lamichhane.

The CIAA had investigated the complaint that the consumption of clinker was high during cement production but the production was low and the officials and employees had colluded to embezzle the money for the sale. The investigation revealed that 1,129 tons of clinker was misappropriated, as it was shown that there was 33,914 metric tons of clinker in the fiscal year 2074/75, but only 32,785 metric tons were found in the physical test conducted on 12 Asoj 2075.

In subsequent fiscal years, there have been allegations of misappropriation of production by underreporting the clinker results.
