Gen-G protesters escape detention, cause panic in Kathmandu by riding a motorcycle, police shoot and arrest 'main leader'

Bhavidhani Rai, 50, of Kapan, Kathmandu, was returning home from a stream carrying water as usual at 5 am last Monday. Suddenly, six men on two motorcycles gagged her, stole her earrings, and fled.
‘I never thought that such an incident would happen on the road I always walk on. After being surrounded by six men, I was unable to fight back,’ Rai said, ‘They robbed me of the gold I had bought with the money I saved by weaving carpets and supporting my family.’
Kul Bahadur Bogati, a resident of Triveni Chowk, who works in construction, was returning home at around 9 pm on June 22 after checking on the site work. On the way, a man asked, ‘Do you have a lighter, brother?’ He kept going, saying ‘No.’ A group of six people on two motorcycles grabbed him from behind and robbed him of his chain.
On December 29, at around 11 pm, Dhruv KC, 23, was returning home from a friend’s birthday party when an attempt was made to rob him near Ram Mandir. KC had to stay in the hospital for 10 days after suffering serious injuries to his head and lip from the attack by the robbers.
Suman Khadka of Sukedhara became a victim of robbery while he was in the hospital with his sick daughter. On Mangsir 2 at around 9 pm, while she was going to buy medicine, a group came from behind near Om Hospital. The group escaped by pulling off her rings and earrings, causing injuries to her fingers.
The incidents of robbery were not limited to the night, the room of Meera Karki of Mulpani was robbed during the day. On Mangsir 26 at around 12 noon, a group entered the house, sprayed the house members with spray, and then robbed about 15 tolas of gold kept in the drawer and escaped.

For three months, complaints of the same nature of robbery and theft had been continuously received at the Kathmandu Police Complex. The group, which was mainly involved in robbing pedestrians of their jewelry, was arrested by the police in Mulpani on Thursday.
Binay Tamang, 23, a resident of Bhumlu Rural Municipality-3 in Kavre and currently residing in Mulpani, was shot and taken into custody after he tried to attack the police during a check. Police claim that he is the main leader of the robbery gang.
The District Police Range, Kathmandu, held a press conference on Thursday and made public 10 people, including the main planner Tamang. According to the police, most of those arrested have criminal backgrounds. Tamang was arrested in a theft case in 2079 BS. After that, he was arrested again in a robbery case and escaped from custody during the Gen-G demonstration.
24-year-old Ayan Majhi of Sindhuli Marin Rural Municipality-5, 32-year-old Sabin Majhi of Marin-7, 23-year-old Manish Ramaili of Morang Pathari Shanishchare-3, who works at Khotang Jewelers, 29-year-old Pema Tamang of Chaurri Deurali-1, Kavre, 20-year-old Salon Tamang, 18-year-old Rajiv Bhandari of Bhumlu-3, Kavre, 32-year-old Vishal Tamang of Doramba-8, Ramechhap, 28-year-old Bidur Bishwakarma of Sunchandi Kaligadh, a resident of Khotang, and 29-year-old Phurba Tamang of Lisankhu Pakhar-3, Sindhupalchowk.
According to Kathmandu Police Chief SSP Ramesh Thapa, many of these have been arrested for theft before.
SAP Thapa said that the group used to rob people walking alone at night. The group used to travel on two motorcycles and rob the jewelry of those sitting behind them. Police have also recovered six motorcycles and two taxis from the arrested persons. Similarly, mobile phones and khukuris have also been recovered from them. Twenty-seven victims of the robbery have come in contact with the police and four complaints have been filed.
