A year has passed since the brutal murder of 14-year-old Ishara Khadka and 15-year-old Saraswati Khadka of Ghodasain, Dhakari Rural Municipality-8.
The pain of the victim's family has increased after a teenager involved in the incident escaped during the Genji protest on Bhadra 24. According to the Achham District Police, since both the accused teenagers were under the age of 18, they were kept in the Doti Correctional Home as per the Juvenile Justice Act. But on Bhadra 24, a teenager absconded from the Doti-based correctional home.
After the incident last year, the Achham police had made public the preliminary investigation findings that the murder was committed due to a love affair, rejection of sexual proposals, and refusal to conceal the incident. According to the police, the two teenagers involved in the incident were taken into custody and the investigation was continued by extending the time limit from the Achham District Court. The answers to other questions regarding the involvement of other people in the incident, technical and postmortem report findings are still to be revealed.
According to Raibhan Kunjeda, the case was scheduled for Sunday. However, the case has been postponed due to the need to study the case file as the government prosecutor has been transferred and a new one has arrived. ‘There has been news that a person has escaped from the Doti Children’s Home during the Genji movement.’ Srestedar Kunjeda said.
Udayram Khadka, the father of the deceased Saraswati, has complained that justice has not been delivered even after a year. ‘I have been crying day and night for a year.’ He said, ‘A year has passed and justice has not been delivered.’ The murderer of my granddaughter and daughter must be sentenced to life imprisonment.’ He said that he fears that such incidents may repeat if the culprit is not given strict punishment.
What was the incident?
According to the police investigation, 14-year-old Ishara and 15-year-old Saraswati had been in contact and meeting with the two teenagers for about a year. The four had planned to meet in the forest two days before the incident. The teenagers, who had come to the village to celebrate Maghi Tihar, had reached the forest ahead of schedule and were waiting on the bank of the river.
After the four of them met, the police investigation revealed that they had a conversation about general conversation, songs, video sharing and love affairs. During the conversation, the teenagers asked for a dopatta as a sign of love. Although Ishara was ready to give the dopatta, an argument seems to have started on the spot when Saraswati refused. According to the police, the main reason for the argument was Saraswati's clear disagreement with having a physical relationship.
While returning the goat, the teenagers had proposed to have a physical relationship with Saraswati. But Saraswati had insisted on having a physical relationship only after marriage. The teenagers have given statements to the police that they were underage and that they were pressured to have a relationship by promising to get married in a few years.
After Saraswati rejected the offer and headed towards the river, the police concluded that a teenager hit Saraswati on the head with a large stone nearby in anger. Although Saraswati died on the spot with the first blow, the police say that they were not aware that the other two people had died at the time.
After learning that the murder had taken place, the investigation revealed that large stones were dropped from above on the spot where Saraswati's body was located to make it look like an accident. In this process, the police have stated that the stones were dropped from the upper part of the river and the incident was made artificial.
Ishara had reached the scene after seeing Saraswati's death. When Ishara saw her friend's death, she tried to go home crying, blaming the teenagers and saying that she would tell everyone about the incident. But the police investigation has shown that Ishara was also killed when she refused to hide the incident.
According to the police, one teenager pushed Ishara from behind and hit her on the forehead with a stone, while the other teenager repeatedly hit Ishara's face, killing her and leaving the scene.
The police investigation has concluded that this incident was not just a casual dispute but a heinous act of violence committed after trying to have physical intercourse without consent. The police believe that the two teenagers died due to a mentality of not being able to tolerate rejection, anger and an attempt to hide the incident.
