These parties fielded indigenous and female candidates in Chitwan

What you should know

There are 64 candidates in the election fray across the three constituencies in the district, including 20 political parties and independents. Indigenous and female candidates are rarely seen here.

The parties that fielded indigenous and women candidates in all three constituencies are the CPN-Maoist and the Nepal Workers and Peasants Party (NWP).

The Rastriya Janamorcha (Rajmo) and the National Republic Party have fielded a large number of female candidates. The Mongol National Organization has fielded indigenous, women and other ethnic groups. Similarly, the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) has fielded candidates from the indigenous as well as Dalit communities. The Progressive Democratic Party (PRALOP) has also fielded candidates from the Dalit community.

Out of the 20 parties that participated in the elections in Chitwan, 14 have fielded candidates in all three constituencies. There is only one party that is fielding candidates in only two constituencies. There are five parties that have fielded candidates in only one of the three constituencies in Chitwan.

Parties like UML, Congress, Nepali Communist Party (NCP), National Independent Party (NIP) and National Democratic Party (NDPP) do not have candidates from the tribal community of the district. Among these parties, the Congress, which has fielded one woman, has fielded Mina Kumari Kharel as its candidate in Chitwan-2. The NCP has fielded Renu Dahal in Chitwan-3 and the NIP has fielded Sobita Gautam in the same area. The candidates fielded by UML and NIP in all three areas are neither women nor indigenous people of the district.

The plains of Chitwan are densely populated by the indigenous Tharu community. Out of the three constituencies, 1 and 3 are densely populated by the Tharu community. Indigenous people like Bote, Kumal and Darai also live in this area. The hilly areas of the district are home to the highly marginalized Chepang community. The hilly areas of Chitwan-1 and Chitwan-2 are Chepang-dominated constituencies. But out of the total 64 candidates in Chitwan, Arjun Praja is the only candidate from the Chepang community.

Arjun has been fielded by NEMKIPA in Chitwan-1. NEMKIPA has fielded women in both Chitwan-2 and Chitwan-3 constituencies. Shobha Basukala and Badri Lakshmi Kavan are NEMKIPA's female candidates. The Mongol National Organization, which has fielded candidates in all three constituencies, has fielded Premlal Chaudhary from the tribal community in Chitwan-1 and Risha Gole, a woman, in Chitwan-2. The NCP Maoist led by Nekravitram Chand, which is contesting elections for the first time, has also fielded indigenous people and women.

The Maoists have also fielded candidates in all three constituencies, with Dirshana Kumari Shahi, a woman, in Chitwan-2, and Ashiq Prasad Mahato from the Tharu community in Chitwan-3. The Rajmo, which has fielded candidates in all three constituencies, has fielded two women, Sita Devi Chhetri in Chitwan-1 and Devi Sharma in Chitwan-2. The JSP, which has fielded candidates in three constituencies, has fielded Kamman Singh Chaudhary from the tribal community in Chitwan-2 and Thaman Singh Sunar from the Dalit community in Chitwan-3.

Another party, Pralopa, has fielded Bikash Kami from the Dalit community in Chitwan-1. The National Republic Party has fielded two women, Ishwari Gurung in Chitwan-1 and Setimaya Tamang in Chitwan-3. Shram Sanskriti Party and Ujjaya Nepal Party have also fielded candidates in all three constituencies of Chitwan. But they have not included women, Dalits or the indigenous community of Chitwan.

The CPN (United), which has fielded two candidates in Chitwan-1 and 3, has fielded Jit Bahadur BK of the Dalit Sumada in Chitwan-3. In only one constituency, Chitwan-2, the Janmat Party has fielded a woman, Nirmala Kumari Thakur. Nagarik Unmukti Party Nepal has fielded Subash Mahato in Chitwan-2 and Nagarik Unmukti Party has fielded Harimaya Mahato in Chitwan-3. Although these two parties, which have fielded women and men from the indigenous community, have similar names, they are different parties and have different election symbols.

The National Nagarik Party has also fielded only one candidate in Chitwan-3. She is not from the indigenous, female or Dalit community. There are 15 independent candidates in the three constituencies of Chitwan. Ravi Kumal from the indigenous community is in the fray in Chitwan-2. Similarly, four women are independent candidates in Chitwan-3. Out of 442,082 total voters in Chitwan, 224,766 are more female voters than male voters.

According to the 2078 census, the total population of Chitwan is 719,859. Of these, 72,658 are indigenous Tharus in Chitwan. The Chepang community has a population of 35,637. The Kumal community, which is a tribal community in Chitwan, has a population of 11,405, the Darai community has a population of 8,850, and the Bote community has a population of 3,144.
