What you should know
As internal differences within the Nepali Congress deepen, supporters of a special general convention in President Sher Bahadur Deuba's home province of Sudurpaschim appear to be weak but enthusiastic.
According to Bharat Bahadur Rokaya, the Far West Coordinator of the Local Level Coordination Steering Committee for the Special General Convention, out of 409 delegates from the Far West, 134 have come out in favor of the special general convention. 'It is encouraging to have such a large number in the Far West,' he said.
None of the district presidents in the nine districts of the Far West have clearly come out in favor of the special general convention. Bajura President Ram Singh Rawal, Baitadi President Chatur Bahadur Chand, and Darchula President Lalit Singh Bohara are from the other party (Deuba faction), but they have not come out in favor of the special. Bajura President Rawal said that even if he is in Kathmandu, he will not participate in the special general convention.
The six district presidents are close to Deuba. Kailali President Narayan Dutta Bhatta, Kanchanpur President Padam Bogati, Dadeldhura President Bhim Bahadur Saund, Doti President Narendra Bahadur Singh, Achham President Pushpa Bahadur Shah and Bajhang President Khadka Bohara are leaders of the establishment party. Rawal of Bajura and Bohara Koirala of Darchula are in favor.
Baitadi President Chatur Bahadur Chand is in favor of a special general convention. He said that the center's failure to call a special general convention was a violation of the party statute. 'I am clearly in favor of a special general convention, even a signatory, but the center did not call it, the general secretary has called it,' he said, 'I will participate in a situation where the party does not break up, I am watching, understanding, how the events will progress.'
Rokaya, the Far West Coordinator of the Local Level Coordination Steering Committee, said that although it is natural for the special supporters to appear weak as it is the home province of Sudurpaschim Party President Deuba, the number of those who have opened up is encouraging. ‘The number in favor of the special is increasing rapidly in other provinces,’ he said, ‘The low number here can easily be covered by the number in other provinces.’
