A special court has acquitted seven people, including the then Director General of the Department of Information and Broadcasting, Pradeep Pariyar, in a corruption case.

The Special Investigation Team (SITT) on Tuesday acquitted Pariyar and others of the corruption case filed by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) on 28 Jestha 2082, alleging that Pariyar and others had colluded in corruption while they were the then Chief Administrative Officer of Kathmandu Metropolitan City.

The CIAA had filed a case against Pariyar and the then directors of the metropolis, Rabindraman Shrestha, Yubaraj Adhikari, Basanta Acharya, Namaraj Dhakal, Assistant Director Uttam Dahal and Engineer Janardan Giri. The CIAA had sought a fine of Rs 43.172 million and imprisonment for all seven defendants, but the Special Investigation Team (SITT) had ruled that the charges were not sufficient.

The CIAA had investigated allegations of irregularities in the contract for the construction of a sewerage system from Basundhara to Mhepi under the Samakhusi Corridor of the metropolis. In which the contractor who had bid with the lowest score was disqualified and a case was filed against them for bidding with a higher score.

The then employees of the metropolis had submitted a bid worth Rs 224 million 94 thousand 612 to Kalpavriksha Kohinoor, who had bid with a higher score, after the Paranantara Sewa Pvt. Ltd., which had bid with a lower score, submitted a bid worth Rs 189 million 22 thousand 325. On Tuesday, a bench of special judges Narayan Prasad Poudel, Hemanta Rawal and Umesh Koirala ruled that the claim of the Authority was not sufficient.
