The government on Monday opened the way for sending Nepalis to Israel as agricultural and home-based auxiliary workers (caregivers).

The Cabinet meeting held at Singha Durbar on Monday afternoon approved the draft of two new protocols sent by Israel to provide long-term employment to Nepali students of agriculture in the agricultural sector and home-based caregivers for 5 years. Now the way has been opened for the signing of these two protocols.

Two more protocols and one amendment are being made under the labor agreement between Israel and Nepal. Israel only has a protocol for sending assistant workers to long-term service centers (Betaboodh). A draft with amendments has also been sent to this.

According to the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security, the draft of three protocols sent by Israel has been completed. The protocol for caring for the elderly in one hospital (Betaboodh) has been further amended. The second is to provide employment to agricultural students and the third is to provide employment as caregivers at home.

According to the Ministry of Labor, the recruitment process of workers will be carried out through the government mechanism in all three sectors. The Israeli Embassy in Nepal has stated that agricultural students going to Israel under the Learn and Earn program will be employed as workers in the agricultural sector. The Learn and Earn program lasts only 11 months. So far, three thousand students have gone to Israel under this program.

Similarly, Israel has stated that it will provide employment in the field of caring for the elderly and physically disabled at home. Nepalis started going to this sector since 2007. Nepalis who came to work at that time are still working at home.

However, new workers have not been able to go after the closure of the manpower company due to financial exploitation. Currently, about 5,000 Nepalis are working in Israel. For the past four years, they have been going only to Vetaboodh. A year ago, 2,120 people were selected for Vetaboodh. Out of which, 900 have already gone.
