Six new birds have been recorded in Nepal in 2025. These birds have been found from Kakadbhitta in the east to Saptari in Madhesh, Lumbini Province, Kathmandu Valley, and Bulbule Lake in Surkhet.

Purple Rumped Sunbird (Baijani Bunge) 

On 19 February 2025, the 'Purple Rumped Sunbird' was recorded in Kakadbhitta, Mechinagar Municipality-6, Jhapa. The Nepali name for the bird is 'Baijani Bunge'.

Bird researcher Devendra Kumar Kharel saw the male/female birds on avocado and Sheetal sugarcane trees during his observation. After Kharel, ornithologists Anish Timsina, Chakra Timsina and Shankar Luintel have also seen the bird, according to the Nepal Ornithologists' Association. This bird is found resident in Bangladesh, India, Myanmar and Sri Lanka.

Violet Cuckoo (Purple Cuckoo)

A team including ornithologist Rajendra Gurung discovered the 'Purple Cuckoo' in the Sukhani forest area of ​​Ilam, located at an altitude of 300 meters above sea level, on April 7.

Malaysian ornithologists Alexander John Eng Yang and Roger Robert Raja and Nepali ornithologist Anish Timilsina were also involved along with Gurung. The team initially identified the bird as the 'Violet Cuckoo'. This was confirmed after sending the photo and video of the bird to the Nepal Bird Record Committee.

The scientific name of the bird is Chrysoccus scythorhynchus. This bird is found resident in Bhutan, Malaysia, Singapore, Bangladesh, Brunei, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Philippines, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, according to the Nepal Ornithologists' Association. It has been found to breed in Bhutan, the Philippines and Singapore.

Short-tailed shearwater

A new bird was seen swimming in the Koshi Dam reservoir in Hanumannagar Kankallini Municipality of Saptari on May 3. This 'Short-tailed Seabird', seen by ornithologist Anish Timsina, was confirmed to be a migratory bird.

Malabar Whistling Thrush

The first recorded sighting of the ‘Malabar Whistling’ species in Nepal was on May 30. The bird was seen in the Lumbini Cable Car Station area near Golpark in Rupandehi, Lumbini Province.

A new bird named ‘Siberian Sand Plover’ was found in Madhyapur Thimi Manohara field in Bhaktapur, on June 20. The bird was discovered by a team including Kumud Parajuli, Supradeepta Neupane and Shatruhan Pandey.

Red-necked Grebe (Ratokanthe Dubulki)

Students of the Agriculture and Forestry University, Hetauda also discovered a new bird for Nepal. Graduate students Sugam Guragain and Sushmita Chaudhary found the 'Ratokanthe Dubulki bird' in Bulbule Lake in Birendranagar, Surkhet.

With the record of the new bird, Karnali Province is also becoming a destination for bird study and research, said ornithologist Hemsagar Baral. 'In 2025, the world's rarest Kalikanthe stork was recorded in Humla,' he said, 'Now the Red-throated Diving Bird has been seen.' This has increased the potential for bird tourism in Karnali.'
