Talks have begun between the locals and the police in the Himalayan district of Dolpa to resolve the dispute over the disappearance of a local youth. The talks began on Sunday at the Tripurakot Police Post in Tripurasundari Municipality-1.
Facilitated by the mayor, Janachandra Rokaya, Chief District Officer Bhimraj Koirala, DSP Ruk Bahadur Khadka, and the family of the missing youth, as well as ward chairmen of ward no. 5 and 6, Nar Jhankri and Dipendra Chalaune, are participating on behalf of the victim.
The heated dispute between the Area Police Office, Karopguard, and the locals of Lha village in the same ward over the disappearance of the youth of ward no. 5 has been going on for two days.
Although the Provincial Police Office, Surkhet, deployed a three-member investigation committee led by Superintendent of Police SP Ram Prasad Ghartimagar to investigate the incident, DSP Khadka said that the investigation team was stuck in Jajarkot after the locals declared a traffic ban since Saturday night.
The team was unable to reach the incident site after the locals refused to allow the investigation team's vehicle to enter.
Locals have alleged that 34-year-old local youth from Lha village, Jun Rokaya, disappeared after being chased by the police on the pretext of a check on Friday evening.
Hundreds of locals have been protesting for two days demanding the body or life of the missing Rokaya, and an indefinite traffic ban has been announced.
Police said that the dispute broke out after Rokaya was tried to be checked at the Chhepke bridge, about three kilometers from the police station, on suspicion of drug trafficking.
Police say that Rokaya panicked and jumped into the large Bheri river before the police could check him.
Rokaya is still missing.
Locals and police searched the Bheri river since early morning but could not find him, but the team returned after failing to find him.
Chief District Officer Koirala said that the police administration is always ready to conduct a fair investigation after the incident and provide justice to the victims.
A large number of security personnel have been mobilized at the scene and the negotiation site.
After the announcement of the transport shutdown, Karnali Provincial Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Dolpa (A) Provincial Assembly member Sher Bahadur Budha has also been stranded in Jajarkot, unable to enter his home district.
Similarly, Karnali Provincial Minister for Water Resources and Development Vijaya Budha, who had reached Dolpa on special work after the announcement of the indefinite transport shutdown, has also not been able to return from Dolpa.
