A new bird, the Red-throated Diver, has been discovered in Nepal. The bird has been recorded in Bulbule Lake in Birendranagar, Surkhet. The records were made by Sugam Guragain and Sushmita Chaudhary, undergraduate students at the Agriculture and Forestry University, Hetauda.

They had taken photos and videos after seeing a new bird in the lake during an educational trip to western Nepal. The student Guragain said that he was excited after seeing a new bird that had never been seen before in the lake, which is located at an altitude of 656 meters above sea level.

The video and photos were sent to the Bird Conservation Society (BCN) for further study and research on this bird. BCN President Bimal Thapa said that BCN confirmed that it was new to Nepal after consulting, suggesting and consulting with national and international experts on birds.

Now the number of birds recorded as being found in Nepal has increased to 903. The number of diving bird species in Nepal has increased to 4. There are 22 species of diving birds in the world. This is a migratory bird. Sometimes a bird that is seen wandering is called a migratory bird. It may have stopped during its journey. Birds that appear in a strange way are migratory birds. Student Guragain said that he was happy to be able to identify a new bird for the country.

With the record of the new bird, Karnali province is also becoming a destination for bird study and research, said ornithologist Hemsagar Baral. 'In 2025, the world's rare Kalikanthe stork was recorded in Humla,' he said, adding that now the Red-throated Diver has been seen again. This has increased the potential for bird tourism in Karnali,' he said.
