The Advertising Board has taken action against two daily newspapers in Lumbini Province for abusing their classified status.

Kapilvastu's Buddha Darpan National Daily and Bhairahawa's Gautam Buddha Sandesh Daily have been taken into action after publishing government tender notices claiming to be 'national level'.

According to the board, Buddha Darpan is a classified newspaper at the provincial level, while Gautam Buddha Sandesh is not listed in the classification. Both newspapers had published tender notices of various government bodies from Bhadra 2, 2081 to Asoj 9, 2081.

According to Section 14 of the Public Procurement Act, 2063, there is a provision that national-level tenders should be published in national-level newspapers. The decision was taken at the board meeting on Mangsir 3, 2082 after investigating a complaint registered with the board on Asoj 6, 2081.

Which newspaper should be taken into action?

The board has imposed different restrictions on both newspapers. Gautam Buddha Sandesh Daily has been banned from publishing any advertisement or information from Poush 10 to Magh 9 (30 days). The board will also suspend the process of renewing the newspaper during this period.

Similarly, it has been decided not to provide public welfare advertisements to the Buddha Darpan National Daily until mid-Ashar 2083. In addition, the renewal of the newspaper has also been stopped during this period.

The board has concluded that publishing information beyond the status of classification is not only against the law but will also seriously affect the credibility of government information. 'Taking advertisements by showing a status that is not there is a violation of the advertising cycle and public procurement process,' states the statement signed by the board's spokesperson Devi Pandey (Khatri).
