Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens Shraddha Shrestha has said that various welfare schemes have been introduced for the benefit of senior citizens.

At a program organized on the occasion of the 5th National Senior Citizens Day, she pointed out that the cooperation and support of all stakeholders, including the three levels of government, civil society, and families, is necessary to solve the problems of senior citizens.

Minister Shrestha informed that the process of managing a special hotline service of '1115' number to directly listen to the health-related problems and complaints faced by senior citizens has been taken forward in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. She said, "Through this service, senior citizens can directly raise their health-related problems and complaints with the ministry at any time."

According to her, the ministry has committed to providing free ambulance services targeted at senior citizens in every province. She said that the necessary homework is being done for this and the goal is to operate the service within a month. Minister Shrestha informed that the work of upgrading the Pashupati Old Age Home, especially addressing the shortage of health workers and ambulances seen during the monitoring of the Ashram, has also been progressing.

Similarly, Minister Shrestha said that discussions and coordination are underway with the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport on providing additional facilities and discounts to senior citizens to provide more convenience in public transport. This is expected to make the movement of senior citizens more convenient and respectful.

The Government of Nepal has started celebrating National Senior Citizens Day since 2078 BS in commemoration of the historic day when the government announced the old age allowance for the first time on Poush 11, 2051 BS.
