The Election Commission inaugurated the center in a new look on Friday, making it larger than before.
The Election Commission has converted its 'Media Center' into an 'Election Information Dissemination and Coordination Center'.
The commission inaugurated the center in a new format on Friday, making it more spacious than before. According to the new arrangement, there will be three main units under the center, said commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai.
The center has an Information Ethics Promotion Unit, a Media Center, and an Electronic Voter Education Unit. ‘The Information Ethics Promotion Unit will monitor false information, propaganda, and hate speech, especially during the election,’ said spokesperson Bhattarai. ‘It has been given the responsibility of fact-checking such false information and collaborating with regulatory bodies to prevent the election from being affected.’
For this, the commission has also planned to coordinate and collaborate with digital platforms like Meta (Facebook) and discussions have already begun, he informed. The commission had also collaborated with technology companies in the 2079 local elections. It had tried to make compliance with the code of conduct, advertising control and information management effective by coordinating and signing agreements with Meta and TikTok. Since then, Facebook has included Nepal in its ad library and started providing details of political, social and election-related advertisements from here, as well as the expenses incurred on them.
The Electronic Voter Promotion Unit aims to inform voters by creating audio-visual materials related to voter education and using other modern technologies. In addition, the media center will continue the regular work of communication coordination and information flow carried out by the previous press office, the commission has stated.
According to the commission, this new center will have 26 employees. The center will include experts from the print media, television, information technology, and security agencies, the commission has stated. The center will also hold media briefings every week.
