The Election Commission has stated that there are 2,043 voters for the National Assembly elections. The election is being held on 11th Magh for the 18 vacant seats in the National Assembly. Provincial Assembly members, rural municipality chairpersons and vice-chairpersons, and municipal mayors and deputy mayors are the voters for the election of National Assembly members.

The Commission has published the preliminary voter list on Wednesday. The Commission has stated that the final list will be published in 22 weeks after the process of opposing claims and other processes is completed. The Commission has published the names of 545 provincial assembly members and 1,498 municipal chairmen/vice-chairmen and mayors/deputy mayors.

There are 550 members in 7 provincial assemblies. Of these, one has been removed from office as per the court order. In addition, four have been suspended. Similarly, one of the 753 local level officials has died and seven have been suspended. The names of those who have died and been suspended have been removed from the voter list by the Commission. The voting weight of provincial assembly members, rural municipality chairmen and vice-chairmen, and municipal mayors and deputy mayors is different. One vote of a provincial assembly member is worth 53 votes, while the voting weight of rural municipality and municipal officials is 19.

The term of office of 4 members from Madhesh Province, 3/3 from Koshi and Lumbini Provinces, and 2/2 from Bagmati, Gandaki, Karnali, and Sudurpaschika in the National Assembly is set to end on 20 Falgun. Article 86(3) of the Constitution states that elections should be held 35 days before the vacancy occurs for the vacant seat of a National Assembly member due to the expiration of the term of office. Accordingly, elections are set to be held on 11 Magh for the vacant seat on 20 Falgun. The new members will be elected by the votes of the members of the Provincial Assembly of the province from which the seat is to be vacant, the chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of the rural municipalities within the province, and the mayors and deputy mayors of the municipalities within the province.

Voting will be held on a provincial basis. The Commission has already designated the National Assembly election office, election officer, and polling center in the capitals of all 7 provinces. There are 93 Provincial Assembly members and 274 municipal chairpersons/vice-chairpersons and mayors in Koshi Province. They are voters for the 3 seats in the National Assembly that are about to be vacant from there. The total voter weight of all voters in Koshi, including the provincial assembly and local level, is 10,135.

Out of the 107 provincial assembly members of Madhesh Province, 3 of them have been suspended, so the names of 104 have been included in the voter list. Provincial assembly members Saroj Singh Kushwaha (Mahottari) of JSP, Dipendra Kumar Thakur (Dhanusha) of UML and Abhiram Sharma (Mahottari) of LOSPA are suspended.

Similarly, out of the 272 local level office bearers, the names of 5 of them who are under suspension are not included in the voter list. There are 267 voters from the local level in Madhesh. The total voter weight there is 10,585. There are 110 provincial assembly members in Bagmati Province. Similarly, 237 out of 238 names of local level members are included in the voter list. The voter weight of the province is 10,333.

In Gandaki Province, 59 out of 60 names of provincial assembly members and 170 names of local level members are included in the voter list. The voter weight of that province is 6,357. Rajiv Gurung (Deepak Manange), who was elected as a provincial assembly member from Manang, has been relieved of his post by the Supreme Court.

In Lumbini, all 87 provincial assembly members are included in the voter list. Similarly, 217 out of 218 municipal office bearers are included in the voter list. The post is vacant in Lumbini Cultural Municipality of Rupandehi due to the death of the mayor elected from Nepali Congress. The total voter weight of Lumbini is 8,734.

Similarly, in Karnali, the voter turnout is still 5,122 as all 40 provincial assembly members and 158 municipal members are on the voter list. In the Far West, 52 out of 53 provincial assembly members and 175 out of 176 municipal voters are on the voter list. Former Chief Minister Dirgha Bahadur Sodari, elected from the CPN (Unified Socialist Party), has been suspended. The total voter turnout in the province is 6,081.
