Badri Prasad Mandal, a leader who was at the center of power politics from the Panchayat to the active reign of the king, passed away in Biratnagar on Tuesday at the age of 88.
Mandal, who gradually faded from the political scene after the 2062/63 BS people's movement, died in his sleep at his residence in Ghoghapul Chowk, Metropolitan City-9, according to his family.
According to his niece Jasmine Mandal, Mandal's health condition was normal till Monday night. 'He had gone to the toilet in the morning and returned to bed on his own.' Jasmine said that he died in his sleep.
Mandal, whose ancestral home is Majhare, Jahada Rural Municipality-2, south-eastern Morang, had entered Panchayat politics since 2036 BS.

He was a member of the National Panchayat. In 2042 BS, Mandal became the Minister of State for Finance for a while and later the Minister of Forests.
In the 2051 BS mid-term elections, Mandal lost to Nepali Congress leader Shailaja Acharya from Morang. But in the 2056 BS elections, he defeated Acharya.
After the political changes in 2046 BS, Mandal left the royalist line and became active in the Nepal Sadbhavana Party. After the death of the party's founding president Gajendra Narayan Singh, he also served as the acting president for a while.
Mandal returned to power during the active reign of the then King Gyanendra Shah. He was the Deputy Prime Minister in the cabinet formed under his chairmanship by Gyanendra.
With the fall of the 240-year-old monarchy, Mandal moved away from politics. Lately, he has been living an anonymous life at home.
Mandal's family consists of two wives, three sons and three daughters. The family has stated that one of his four sons has already passed away. Mandal's funeral was held at Jahda-2 Majhare in Morang.
