Chora Tihar is being celebrated on Sunday in Jumla, Dolpa and other districts of Karnali Province. It is customary to celebrate Chora Tihar here on the day of the first day of the month of Paush Shukla, two months after the end of Bhaitika.

During this festival, it is customary for sons to take a bath in the morning and receive tika from their mothers.

During Tihar, it is customary for mothers to give their sons a Akshata on their forehead and a garland of flowers on their necks and feed them with homemade dishes such as Selroti, Finiroti, and Chiniroti as auspicious signs. After applying tika, the sons are blessed with happiness, peace, longevity, and progress. After applying tika, the sons give as much money, clothes, and other koselis as they can as dakshina and bow down to the feet and seek blessings.

During this festival, sons who have gone out of the district also reach home to receive tika from their mothers. Sons who cannot reach home due to special work have recently been receiving blessings over the phone or video call, and the mothers also keep the koselis made for their sons separately.

After the tika is applied by the mother on the day of Chora Tihar, all the men gather and go to every house and village to play Bhailo like Deunsi. The money raised from playing Bhailo is used to repair public properties such as Dhara, Padhenra, and Bato, while the remaining money is used to go to Pathi Bhait (forest feast).

Today, women gather in public places to have fun by playing Chutkila and Deuda and exchange their sorrows. Ramananda Upadhyay of Tripurasundari Municipality-1 said that Chora Tihar is celebrated only in a few districts of Karnali, including Dolpa.

He said that the excitement of this festival, which has been celebrated for centuries, is not as great as it used to be. ‘Earlier, most people lived in the villages.’ The excitement used to be the same, now most of them are in the city markets, some are outside the district for employment, even though they are there, there is no excitement now,’ said Upadhyay. He said that the new generation is losing interest in such festivals that carry history.

The one played during Bhaitihar is called Deusi and the one played during Chora Tihar is called Bhailo here. Deusi is played in a different way and rhythm here. He also said that there is a tradition of eating the rice, paddy, and money that is collected after playing Bhailo together.

On Chora Tihar, those who do not have a mother go to the local monastery and celebrate by applying tika and akshat from the hands of the priest.

Some parts of Bhailo played during Chora Tihar are as follows:
