A special court has ordered the release of Joint Secretary Tirtha Raj Bhattarai, who was named as a defendant by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority in the visit visa smuggling case, on a bail of Rs. 2.5 million.
The CIAA filed a corruption case against Bhattarai and seven others as defendants in the Special Court Kathmandu on Thursday. A case was also filed against Bhattarai for money laundering. The day after the case was filed, the Special Court issued a detention order against Bhattarai and sought a bail of Rs 2.5 million.
The detention debate was held in the bench of Special Court Chairman Sudarshan Dev Bhatta and members Narayan Prasad Poudel and Delhi Ratna Shrestha. The majority of Bhatta and Poudel sought bail from Bhattarai. However, Judge Shrestha has opined that Bhattarai should not be sought for bail and should be sent to remand until the case is resolved. However, the majority of the judges have sought bail and Bhattarai will be released from detention if he posts bail.
