Speaking at an interaction on the topic of ‘Impact of gender-based violence on adolescent girls through technology’, stakeholders emphasized the responsible use of technology . Presenting a working paper at the program, Babita Basnet, Executive Director of Media Advocacy Group, said that violence through technology has increased . She said that both effective implementation of existing laws and necessary formulation of new laws are needed to stop this .
‘The laws that we have now have are not being implemented . Even if they are implemented, violence through technology can be reduced to some extent,’ she said, ‘But overall, there is no alternative to formulating cyber laws to minimize this problem .’
Ujwal Acharya, Director of CMR Nepal Journalism Academy, said that it is also necessary to spread awareness in the society about violence through technology .
‘In some cases, people are not even aware that violence is happening through technology . But he is suffering,' he said, 'Technology has further promoted the distortions happening in our society. But violence against women or other violence is not all a product of technology. It is a trend within our society and we ourselves should be active to reduce it.'
He said that various problems happening in society can be addressed through technology even by relying on existing laws.
'It is not that cyber law is needed for everything. Many things can be addressed by the current law. For example, there is a law on sexual harassment, but now it does not mean that this law will not attract those who harass through digital means. But the state has to show proactivity.'
Ram Prasad Dahal, General Secretary of the Federation of Nepali Journalists, said that journalists need to do special reporting on incidents of violence against women happening in society.
'Various investigations are being done in such incidents. But, based on that, the news that should have been made. It does not seem to have been made. We should pay attention to this too. Because only when it comes to the media does a new debate start in society.'
