The family of the victim has regained hope of getting justice after a committee was formed to investigate the truth of the incident. The family of a Fulani Tharu from South Bhakari, Badhaiyatal Rural Municipality-4, has regained hope of getting justice after the Ministry of Home Affairs formed a committee to investigate the truth of the incident.
Fulani Tharu, who is in double mourning after losing her daughter and husband in October, said that she hopes to get justice. ‘A month has passed since the incident, but I was afraid that the concerned agencies would not show much interest in the incident,’ said Fulani Tharu. ‘Now that our incident has reached the Prime Minister, I hope to get justice.’
Anju’s brother Arun Tharu said that this incident happened because her sister went to the ward several times to apply for citizenship, but the concerned agencies did not facilitate her. ‘The sister decided to commit suicide because she did not get an identity card,’ he said. ‘Anju’s seven-year-old daughter Anita Tharu does not have a birth certificate, her entire responsibility has fallen on our shoulders, the concerned agencies should provide her niece’s birth certificate and the rights she deserves.’ ‘I am confident that the investigation committee formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs will investigate the truth and bring us justice,’ he said.
Chief District Officer Gogan Bahadur Hamal said that a complaint was received after the incident and that the police are investigating. ‘The ministry has formed an investigation committee,’ said Chief District Officer Hamal, ‘The investigation committee will conduct further investigation into the incident.’
After the news was published in Kantipur on Friday under the title ‘Discrimination against women on citizenship: The state did not provide justice, the father and daughter gave their lives,’ it drew the attention of Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Saturday. Prime Minister Karki had instructed Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal to understand the truth of the incident. The ministry, taking a secretary-level decision on Sunday, decided to form a committee to investigate the incident under the coordination of Joint Secretary Suresh Panthi, comprising the ministry’s Deputy Secretary Kulshekhar Aryal and one member.
The committee has been ordered to conduct an impartial and factual investigation into the incident and submit a report within 5 days. Anju Tharu of Dakshin Bhakari village of Badhaiyatal Rural Municipality-4 chose the path of suicide on 22 Kartik. Her father, 61-year-old Kanchha Tharu, who was mourning the death of his daughter, also committed suicide four days later.
