The police have increased their vigilance after an anonymous letter in the name of an extremist group was sent to the government machinery. The Valley Police Office, Ranipokhari, has directed its subordinate bodies to increase vigilance based on the letter received against 10 VIPs.

The letter, signed by the office's Superintendent of Police (SP) Sitaram Rijal, mentions the names of 10 people, including the CIAA chief commissioner, former chief commissioner, former head of the Oil Regulation Department, former home ministers, and former IGP, and asks for reliable security arrangements at their residences, travel routes, and event venues.

'It has been requested to collect information about the activities of other alleged extremist groups and make effective security arrangements for other prominent people residing there and under the subordinate police offices,' the letter says.

As mentioned in this letter, this directive has been issued based on a letter sent by the Security Services Management Division under the Work Department of the Police Headquarters. Based on this letter, DSP Kaushal Kumar Budhathoki of the District Police Range, Kathmandu, has written a letter to the subordinate bodies asking the police units under the area of the concerned VIPs to make necessary coordination with the concerned persons and make security arrangements.

‘To prevent such activities, it has been requested to mobilize police in plain clothes, including patrolling, news collection, and to secretly disseminate information, and to make reliable arrangements for other special people residing in the office ward area, as directed,’ the letter states.

A senior officer of the Valley Police Office said that caution was taken as such letters cannot be accepted as normal. ‘A separate investigation is being conducted into who sent them and why,’ he said, ‘We have taken precautions to prevent any untoward activity from happening now.’
