Nepal Army Lieutenant General Ganesh Kumar Shrestha has been appointed as the Force Commander of the team deployed in Abyei under the United Nations peacekeeping mission. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed him as the new Force Commander.

Previously, this responsibility was held by Major General Robert Yab Afram of Ghana.

Shrestha was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel on 2 Kartik 2082. Having spent 36 years in the military, he has also served as Sector East Commander in the UNMISS mission in South Sudan.

Shrestha has served as Administrative Registrar at Birendra Military Hospital, Chief of Policy and Planning Directorate at the Army Base, and Commander of 16th and 9th Brigades.

He has completed his master's degree in Military Science and Strategic Studies from the National Defense University of China and the International College of Defense Studies.
