Sharad Kumar Chhetri, a powerful critic and senior teacher of Indian Nepali literature, passed away in Kalimpong on Wednesday morning at the age of 59.

Chhetri, a resident of Kalimpong Satmile, had been battling liver cancer for the past six months. He breathed his last on Wednesday morning during this struggle. His death has left the education and literature sector of the region in mourning, said his close literary figure Dr. Sukraj Diyali.

Chhetri, who had been teaching physics at Nepali Kalyan Higher Secondary School in Siliguri for more than 36 years, was known as an excellent educationist and an exemplary personality. He was a beloved teacher to all due to his logical ability, simple nature and dedication to teaching.

Chhetri, who was equally active in creating literature along with teaching, was considered an established name in the Nepali criticism genre. His criticism collection called 'Pratikriya' is considered famous. A haiku has also been published. He is a poet known for writing long poems. However, the publication of the long poetry collection could not be completed.

With his death, Nepali literature has lost a capable critic and sensitive poet, said Prof. Tejman Baraili. He is survived by his wife and a daughter. Family sources have said that his funeral will be held in Kalimpong on Wednesday.
