Acharya, who was appointed as the chairman, is a senior advocate. There have been various criticisms regarding Acharya's appointment. However, according to the Press Council Act-2048, the chairman of the Press Council can be a retired judge of the Supreme Court or a senior advocate. The act provides for selection from among those who have made special contributions to the field of newspapers.
This is not the first time that a senior advocate has been appointed as the chairman of the Press Council. Previously, Borna Bahadur Karki had become the chairman in 2069.
Who is Acharya?
Born in Dang, Acharya became an advocate in 2040 BS. Similarly, he became a senior advocate in 2069 BS. Acharya, who was on the executive committee of the Nepal Bar Council in 2051 BS, also served as the vice-chairman of the working committee in 2060 BS.
Having worked in Nepalgunj for a long time, he is currently a full-time lawyer. Acharya is currently working as an active senior partner at A.H.N. Legal. Acharya, who has been active in the legal profession for four decades, has experience working in the Mediation Council.
Similarly, Acharya has worked as a consultant for prestigious international and national organizations including USAID, The Asia Foundation, UNDP, Government of Nepal and National Business Initiative.
