The Nepali Embassy in Seoul has issued a warning to be vigilant, saying that misleading propaganda regarding the G-1 visa, which is issued for refugee (asylum/humanitarian) purposes, has increased rapidly in South Korea in recent months.
The embassy has drawn serious attention to the misleading content on social media such as 'G-1 visa is easy to get', 'can work', 'can live', etc., which is attracting Nepalis in a wrong way. According to the embassy, the Korean government grants G-1 (refugee) visas only to people facing humanitarian crises, life-threatening situations, persecution or urgent humanitarian reasons. 'This visa is not for ordinary workers, students or tourists,' the embassy has stated.
The embassy has stated that some groups and individuals are spreading misleading information and enticements on platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, claiming that it is easy to come to Korea with a G-1 visa. The embassy says that some are even promising that this visa will make you earn money and make your stay easier.
According to the embassy, many Nepalis are getting into legal trouble after coming to Korea due to such false information. 'This type of abuse will put Nepali citizens at long-term risk, face legal challenges and even affect future visa prospects,' the embassy has warned.
G-1 visas will not be processed through the embassy
The embassy has clarified that the entire G-1 visa process will be processed only through South Korea's internal mechanisms. 'The embassy neither registers applications nor issues recommendations,' the notice said.
After entering the refugee process, a person's immigration risk profile is also prepared, which could directly affect future foreign employment or visa processes, the embassy has noted.
Urge to rely on official information
The embassy has urged Nepalis to obtain G-1 visa, refugee process and legal information only from government/official sources. The embassy has also stated that if someone is in serious humanitarian crisis or at risk in Korea, the embassy will provide all kinds of support and guidance.
The embassy's statement said, "Protecting the interests, security and reputation of Nepali citizens is the primary responsibility of the embassy."
