The Non-Resident Nepali Campaign, which was torn apart by personal ego, has regained momentum after a long struggle. This campaign, which is facilitating the welfare of millions of Nepalis living abroad, has been focusing on personal interests, while the issues of the Nepali diaspora have been getting overlooked.

After the separate leaderships of the Non-Resident Nepali Association, chairmen Badri KC and Mahesh Kumar Shrestha, agreed to accept each other by putting aside their disputes, both sides signed a 10-point basic unity agreement in the presence of Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Sunday.

There had been a series of disputes in the NRNA since Magh 1, 2078. After this unity, Shrestha's elected working committee, which was selected from the unity general convention organized by the high-level committee formed under the coordination of former president Shesh Ghale on May 3-4, has entered the NRNA secretariat in Baluwatar.

Similarly, the Shrestha side has also officially accepted the working committee of Dr. Badri KC, elected from the eleventh general convention held on October 17-20, 2023. Earlier, both sides had filed a case in the Supreme Court questioning its legitimacy, which has not yet been resolved.

Both sides have agreed to hold the 12th General Convention as a unity convention by April 17. The agreement states that the term of the elected committee will then be considered as the full term.

An 11-member ‘Steering Committee’ has been formed to conduct the unity convention in a transparent and credible manner. Members of the ‘Steering Committee’ will not be allowed to become candidates in the upcoming general convention to play a neutral role in the elections and preparations.

‘A separate System Management Committee will be formed to give full authority to General Secretary Gauriraj Joshi and Baburam Lama for transparency and fairness in membership management,’ the agreement states.

Both sides have agreed to record the committees formed under the leadership of various chairmen (Dr. Badri KC, Kul Acharya, Rabina Thapa, Binod Kunwar and Rajendra Kumar Sharma) as former working committees due to past circumstances.

It is mentioned that the process of handing over the responsibility to KC Shrestha will be taken forward after the general secretary and treasurer of both parties submit their reports to the 12th General Convention and have them certified. 'All cases filed in court regarding NRNA leadership rights will be withdrawn or resolved by mutual agreement, the agreement will be recorded in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and any disputes in implementation will be resolved in coordination with the ministry. In addition, all points will be approved by the 12th General Convention,' the agreement states, 'an audit will be conducted by an independent third party to make the financial management of both parties transparent. It is also mentioned that a separate 'supplementary agreement' will be signed to ensure the full implementation of the agreement and the freedom and impartiality of the 12th General Convention-elections.'

Signing the agreement, both presidents KC and Shrestha have expressed their commitment to take the NRNA forward as a unified, autonomous, non-political and common organization of Nepali society scattered around the world.
