The international conference 'Geomandu 2027' is scheduled to be held in Kathmandu.

The Nepal Geotechnical Society (NGS) on Friday formally announced the conference to be held in Kathmandu from March 17 to 19, 2027. The conference will focus on geotechnical engineering, NGS said.

The conference is being jointly organized by the International Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering Society (ISSMGE) with the 11th Asian Young Geotechnical Engineers (11th AYGEC) and the proposed first South Asian Geotechnical Conference (SACG) under the Association of South Asian Geotechnical Societies (AGSSA).

The announcement was attended by Secretary and Engineer of the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Keshav Kumar Sharma, as the chief guest and Vice President of Asia, ISSMGE, Professor Keh-Jian (Albert) Shou, as the guest. NGS President Associate Professor Indra Prasad Acharya emphasized that ‘Geomandu 2027’ is closely linked to the mission of NGS and will help in scientific collaboration, research integration and development of resilient infrastructure. Referring to NGS as a national platform connecting academia, industry and policy sectors, he said that the Geomandu series is one of the largest technical conferences in Nepal. The conference will include papers by more than 125 scientists.

NGS General Secretary Engineer Kalpana Adhikari reiterated the Society’s commitment to inclusiveness and called for active participation from government agencies, universities, research institutions, the private sector and youth. Conference Chairman Mandeep Subedi stressed the importance of collaboration with Asian and South Asian societies and said that Geomandu 2027, along with the 11th AYGEC and the proposed first SACG, will be an important platform to jointly address the geotechnical challenges of the Himalayan and sub-Himalayan regions.

Conference coordinator Dhundiraj Pathak said that more than 500 delegates from more than 40 countries are expected to participate. Similarly, there will be presentations by more than 240 technicians and panel discussions with experts. Youth Coordinator Engineer Rajan KC said that the 11th AYGEC will prioritize youth leadership and the conference will be fruitful for young students. Organized under the theme ‘Hillside Geotechnics for Infrastructure Development’, ‘Geomandu 2027’ will focus on solving challenges such as landslides, slope failure, erosion, river mobility and seismic hazards.
