Former Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara, who was detained by the district court in a gold smuggling case, has been released on bail of Rs. 2 million.

After the Patan High Court ordered his release on bail, Mahara was released after he paid a cash bail at the Kathmandu District Court, said Kathmandu District Court Information Officer Deepak Kumar Shrestha. On Thursday, a joint bench of Patan High Court judges Arjun Prasad Koirala and Tejendra Prasad Sharma Sapkota ordered Mahara to be released on bail.

Mahara, who was involved in the gold smuggling case, was arrested by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of the Nepal Police on October 26.

Similarly, on October 29, the Kathmandu District Court had ordered Mahara to be remanded in custody. After the district court sent him to custody, Mahara had approached the High Court against it.

The high court quashed the district court's order to remand him in custody as per Section 67 of the Criminal Procedure Code 2074 BS.

On March 9 last year, he was placed in the custody of his son to be present when the District Attorney's Office summoned Mahara for investigation, considering his health condition.
