The Nepal Sugarcane Producers Federation has given an ultimatum to the government to fix the minimum support price for sugarcane on time and pay the remaining subsidy amount for the fiscal year 2081-82.
The federation has given an ultimatum to fulfill its demands by Mangsir 13 after repeated talks between the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, industrialists and farmers failed to reach an agreement.
The federation has warned that it will start a protest from the 14th if the demands are not met. Umesh Chandra Yadav, spokesperson of the Sugarcane Producers Federation, said that the highway will be closed for 1 hour in Harivan, Salarhi on Mangsir 14 and the highway will be closed indefinitely from the 15th.
He said that due to the government's delay, farmers have had to sell sugarcane at the old price and on credit. The farmers are demanding that the price be fixed at Rs 750 per quintal in the current fiscal year. Earlier, the government had said that it would provide a subsidy of Rs 70 per quintal in the fiscal year 2081-82, but has paid only Rs 35, citing lack of resources.
The farmers have also demanded that the remaining Rs 35 be paid immediately.
