The Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD) has elected Nepali media rights activist Laxman Dutta Pant as its Vice President.
The first meeting of the GFMD Steering Committee held during the Global Investigative Journalism Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on November 20 elected Pant as Vice-Chair for the next 4 years.
As Vice-Chair, Pant will work with newly-elected President Rawan Damen, Treasurer Caroline Vuelmain and other members of the Steering Committee to strengthen the global media community amid growing threats to media development, press freedom, journalist safety and information integrity.
With his election as Vice-Chair, Pant became the first Nepali to lead the world's largest network of media development organizations. After being elected as Vice-Chair, Pant chaired the first formal meeting of the Steering Committee. On the occasion, Pant expressed his commitment to 'work with organizations and experts reflecting local to global participation to strengthen the media community even in challenging circumstances'. The newly elected chairperson, Damen, participated in the meeting online.
Pant, a globally recognized Nepali media rights activist and communications expert, has over two decades of experience in journalism, press freedom promotion, research, policy engagement, and project management. He founded Media Action Nepal in 2015 to promote independent and accountable journalism. Under his leadership, the organization has become an active member of major international networks including the Media Freedom Coalition-Consultative Network, Acos Alliance, and GFMD.
As the elected co-chair of the Consultative Network from 2022-2024, Pant played a key role in strengthening partnerships between 51 countries, over 150 civil society organizations, and global bodies involved in press freedom.
