The government formed on the strength of the Gen-G movement is taking over the reins of the country. 27-year-old Yadav Singh, one of the active participants in the same movement, has been on a hunger strike to death on the cold floor of Maitighar Mandal for nine days because the demands of the Gen-G movement have not been met.

Singh, who faced death in the 23 Bhadra movement, says that he will not stop the hunger strike until the government formed by the movement he supported makes a written agreement on his demands. His demands include the immediate arrest of the then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and taking action against them for mass murder as per the prevailing criminal law, the immediate addressing of the demands of the families of the martyrs and injured of the Gen-G movement, and the declaration of the Gen-G movement as a people's movement against misrule and corruption.

He has also made demands, including the formation of a high-level property investigation judicial commission to bring those who amassed immense wealth by holding political and administrative positions to the ambit of corruption-related crimes. But he has not received any assurances other than ministers reaching the hunger strike site saying, 'We will do it and we are doing it.' ‘On the fourth day of the hunger strike, Education Minister Mahavir Pun came,’ said Singh, who fell ill due to the continuous hunger strike at Maitighar, ‘but he said that the demands I had made were not under his ministry.’

He said that Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal came on the fifth day. He also said that he had not signed a written agreement regarding his demands. On the same day, Home Minister Aryal asked to send a representative to meet the Prime Minister in the evening and that he had also sent 7 friends to meet Prime Minister Sushila Karki. ‘Instead of addressing the demands, Prime Minister Karki also explained the situation of the country and said that they were focused on the elections. He also said that he had prioritized our demands, but no written agreement was made,’ said Singh.

Singh, who is on hunger strike, says that he did not eat the cold of Maitighar alone and out of desire. He says that he came to sit on a hunger strike to death after discussing with the families of the deceased and the injured. Therefore, he claims that he will not get up from the road until his demands are met.

Singh from Punarbas Municipality-10, Kanchanpur, completed his schooling in his village and attended college in Kailali. He came to Kathmandu 6 years ago and is currently working as a wage laborer at the National Insurance Company in Kathmandu. He said that he is preparing for public service. He lives in Kathmandu with only his brother and mother in his village. He says that his father died when he was three years old and that he has a simple shop at home.

Singh is one of the people who started the ‘Nepobaby’ trend on social media. On 22 Bhadra, he and the Gen-G youth came to Maitighar and were discussing. He came to participate in the protest at 8 am on 23 Bhadra and said that he was carrying out a peaceful protest. But he claims that the police, instead of controlling the crowd in a calm manner, incited the crowd. He says that he was at a point where he had to do something after his village brother Paras Sunar, who had come with him, was shot.

‘The police did not shoot me that day because I had the national flag in my hand. I feel like I survived because of the flag,’ Singh said, ‘But after my photo was published in the media, I became everyone’s victim.’ He said that the photo was made viral on social media by the Zen-Jis as a rebellion against corruption.

He said that he had previously worked in the student organization Akhil Krantikari, which is close to the Maoists. ‘But after my photo went viral, they tried to link me with Maoist Pushpa Kamal Dahal and me and remove me from the movement,’ he said. ‘Along with insults, I was threatened with death for being a Maoist.’ But he claims that he left the Maoists many years ago. He says that he did not go to the demonstration after that because of the threats.

‘I went to the village on 26 Bhadau. I was campaigning there on my own behalf. I thought that the country had its own government.’ But later, the calls from the relatives of the injured and the deceased made me more aware,' he said, 'When the government said it did nothing, I came for my generation, saying that it was not possible to hide. I came to Kathmandu only after my injured friends called me.' He also informed his mother about the hunger strike. 'I have told my mother. We have two sons. I survived even after dying, mother. The country and friends have cried. I have said that I will fight for them,' he said.

Sleeping in the open air all night makes him shiver badly from the cold of the ground and the falling dew. And during the day, due to dust and sun. Not drinking water has caused various problems in his body. He says that the problems of burning in the stomach, sweating and difficulty breathing have increased. Friends took him to the hospital on Tuesday after the problem of hand tremors increased. But he has not given up. He is on a hunger strike despite being given saline water. He says he has not defecated for three days. Now, he says, he needs the help of his friends even when he has to urinate or get up and sit down.

‘I do not want to become a leader. I am supporting those who fought selflessly for the country for justice. I will not let injustice happen to them,’ said Singh, ‘Yesterday too, I took a bullet thinking I would die. Today too, I am ready to die for justice.’

He felt that since it was a government that Gen-ji accepted, he would not have to go on a hunger strike for a long time to fulfill his demands. ‘But I also hate to say that this is Gen-ji’s government,’ he asked, ‘What kind of government is this that cannot fulfill Gen-ji’s demands? Whose government is it?’
