Sanjita Sah, 28, who went to court and got married after a love affair she had with someone on Facebook, has become destitute after facing violence from her family.
After a three-year relationship, she married Sandesh Sah, 30, of Makari Tol, Rupani Rural Municipality-3, Saptari, on 2081 Jestha 9 at the Parsa District Court. Their marital relationship went well until their mother-in-law Kiran Kumari Sah and father-in-law Dharmadev Sah found out. A year after the court marriage, both families started talking about getting married socially.
Both families went to each other's houses and raised the issue of getting married according to social customs. At that time, Sanjita said that her father-in-law Dharmadev called her father Rameshwar Sah Teli and demanded 10 tolas of gold, 1.5 million in cash, and a four-wheeler. 'If there was a dowry issue, he should have said it earlier. When Sandesh asked why he married me, he replied that it was not like that,' she said. 'From there, our relationship deteriorated and our conversation also decreased.'
Sanjita, who is a relative of Kanchanapur Municipality-7 and works as a nurse at a school in Sindhuli, had visited her in-laws last Tuesday in the hope of improving the relationship. However, Sanjita is in a bad mood after she was not allowed to enter the house. She said that even though she was asked to stay in Dalin with the help of the villagers, she spent the night hungry that day and has been eating food brought by the neighbors since the next day. "My husband, who promised to be with me for life, changed his words and behavior under family pressure and left me homeless," she said. "Now they are physically and mentally torturing me to get me out of this situation."
The last time Sanjita was subjected to domestic violence was last Thursday. She has also filed a complaint with the District Police Office. She had earlier filed a domestic violence case against her husband Sandesh, who works as an engineer in a private company in Parsa, her mother-in-law Kiran, and her father-in-law Dharmadev in the Saptari District Court.
Hearing the case on Asad 23, 2082, the bench of Judge Mohan Bahadur Adhikari also issued an interim protective order. The order, issued under Section 6 of the Domestic Violence (Offences and Punishment Act, 2066, states that Sanjita should be allowed to live safely at home, be fed and clothed, and not be beaten or abused. However, Sanjita sought justice saying that the order was not implemented. Sanjita's father-in-law Dharmadev, who is also a teacher, said that there was no dowry issue. 'All his allegations are baseless. I did not ask for dowry or commit violence,' he said. 'There is a dispute between the son and daughter-in-law. There is a problem when they do not come together.' Sandesh said that he did not want to live together after seeing Sanjita's behavior change. 'Initially, the behavior was good, but later, seeing the behavior change, I have decided not to live together,' he said. District Police Spokesperson DSP Dambar Bahadur Puri said that efforts are being made to reach a settlement as per Sanjita's demand. 'While Sandesh is running away, it has not been resolved,' he said. 'Sandesh's father is in touch, he has said that the issues will be resolved in 10 days.'
