The central committee meeting of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has been postponed indefinitely due to a dispute over the nomination of advisors.
An official said that the meeting was adjourned after some office bearers and members of the federation affiliated with the Nepal Press Union expressed their disagreement with the process of nominating advisors as per the federation's statute.
The federation's statute provides for the nomination of the outgoing president as an advisor. However, a central member of the federation said that the meeting was disrupted after some office bearers and members close to the press union ignored the provision of the statute and demanded that the then acting president Bala Adhikari also be nominated as an advisor.
The member said, 'The central committee meeting of the federation was affected due to the demands and stances that are against the constitution. The meeting called for 10 am on Saturday at Siddhartha Cottage in Kathmandu could not be held at the scheduled time and the whole day was spent in controversy.'
According to the member, President Nirmala Sharma had already sent a letter in the morning informing about the nomination of advisors as per the statute, including outgoing President Bipul Pokharel, closest competitor Ramesh Bista and previous President Govinda Acharya. Some of them were present at the meeting. However, office bearers close to the Press Union had argued that Bal Adhikari should also be included as an advisor.
The member said that after the President could not resolve the dispute and no consensus could be reached, the meeting called for today was postponed in consultation with the Senior Vice President until further notice.
However, the General Secretary of the Federation said that the meeting was postponed after the President tried to decide on the advisors unilaterally. General Secretary Ram Prasad Dahal said, 'There was a dispute in three central committee meetings regarding the nomination of advisors. It should be decided through discussion and consensus, but the President moved forward unilaterally.'
General Secretary Dahal said that Chairman Sharma had sent a letter to the advisor without consulting the office bearers, contrary to the statute. 'We had said that we should hold a meeting of the office bearers, make a collective proposal and take it to the central committee, but the Chairman did not want to make the office bearer meeting formal,' Dahal added, 'The process of calling a meeting and sending a letter falls under the authority of the Secretary General, but he did not inform me when he sent the letter.'
