Binadevi Kanwar, who flew to Kuwait in December 2075, returned after 14 months. The reason for her early return was that work was not as expected.

A month after returning home, she took the Gulf route again. This time the destination was Oman.

Binadevi, 45, from an endangered tribal community, was a tea picker at Raj Tea Estate in Mechinagar-7 before going abroad. Her husband worked in a factory. She chose to travel abroad after both of them lost their jobs before the Covid pandemic.

After the government banned Nepali women from going to the Gulf as domestic workers, brokers have been using the Indian route. The broker who sent them to Kuwait sent them to Oman. The broker had flown to the Gulf via the Indian route both times. Her second destination was not as uncomfortable as the first. She joined an Omani man's house as a domestic worker. The work was good. The service facilities were also satisfactory.

Everything was going smoothly. However, one day while working, she suddenly collapsed. She has been in an unconscious state at Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah, southern Oman, since 23 Magh 2079. She had been working illegally for about a year and a half and had only been granted legal status shortly before the accident.

Her family was informed by her colleagues that she had collapsed while working as a domestic worker. According to her son Sanjay, the family was informed only after six months through the Nepali Embassy in Oman. According to the doctor, Binadevi had suffered a serious heart attack. However, the family suspects that Binadevi may have fallen into a coma due to physical and mental torture.

The eldest son, Sanjay , wanted to bring his mother to Nepal and treat her there as much as possible. Last year, with the help of the Nepali Embassy in Oman, he also went to Oman to meet his mother. However, he returned disappointed. He had to return empty-handed after staying in the hospital with his mother for seven days. ‘I had gone to pick up my mother,’ Sanjay said, ‘but it was not possible due to various problems.’

According to the embassy, Binadevi can be sent to Nepal. However, a doctor and a nurse are required for that. In addition, a ticket worth six extra seats will have to be purchased. There is also no facility to put her in a wheelchair, because she is not able to sit upright.

Another challenge has been added as there is no direct flight from Oman to Nepal. Since two planes have to be changed, seats have to be purchased on both flights. ‘This is why the rescue process has become more complicated,’ said an embassy source. The Nepali community in Oman also tried to help in the rescue, but the process did not move forward.

Binadevi is still in the hospital in an unconscious state. The family in Jhapa is worried about when they will be able to bring her back. ‘It seems that it will cost 20-25 lakhs to bring her home,’ says Sanjay.

Showing concern about Binadevi’s condition, Nepali Congress General Secretary Bishwaprakash Sharma had tried to help with her rescue and treatment through the embassy. He had also inquired about the situation with Ambassador Dornath Aryal in Oman over the phone.

Ambassador Aryal says, ‘Her condition is serious. At this time, it is not possible to send her by air. She is being treated at a government hospital.’
