Jhalanath Khanal, a respected leader of the CPN-Unified Socialist Party, has also finally joined the unity process with parties including the Maoist-NCP-S. Earlier, he had accused Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal of splitting the party and merging with the Maoists.
He had opposed the unification process, saying that ‘they are trying to dissolve the party by uniting with the Maoists’. He was even preparing to join the UML after UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli said that old leaders could return.
Khanal had also met with Oli on Tuesday evening. But on Wednesday, he was sitting in Bhrikutimanda wearing a star-studded ‘badge’, the proposed election symbol of the Nepali Communist Party after the unification.
Khanal had been saying that the current need is for practical unity not only with the Maoists but also among all leftists.
