The Nepali Embassy in New Delhi has expressed concern after Qatar Airways offloaded Nepali passenger Shambhavi Adhikari at Delhi Airport, who was on her way to attend a conference in Berlin.
Nepal's Ambassador Shankar Sharma met Qatari Ambassador to India Mohammad Hassan Jabir Al-Jabir on Tuesday and drew attention to the incident.
According to Surendra Thapa, Deputy Chief of the Nepali Mission in Delhi, Ambassador Sharma had sought information about the incident in which Shambhavi Adhikari was not allowed to travel to Berlin via Doha.
'The Qatari envoy has committed to contacting the Qatar Airways office in Delhi to understand the details of the incident and inform the Nepali Mission,' Thapa said.
The incident took place on the morning of October 10. According to the Nepal Airlines Corporation, Shambhavi Adhikari had reached Delhi from Kathmandu via an Air India flight. From there, she was planning to travel to Berlin via Doha via Qatar Airways.
The official reached Terminal-3 after transit check-in and obtained a Qatar Airways boarding pass. The dispute started there when Qatar Airways employees questioned her documents, according to a corporation source.
'There was suspicion about the return ticket and hotel documents from Berlin,' an official of the corporation said, 'After the ground staff checked the documents, a supervisor was called. The supervisor also tore up the boarding pass issued in Delhi, considering the documents incomplete.'
Qatar Airways then requested the Air India staff to 'send the passenger back to Nepal,' but Air India refused. After that, the Nepal Airlines Corporation office inside the airport was contacted and asked to take the passenger back.
Bhanubhakta Katwal, the corporation's Delhi airport manager, took charge of Sambhavi Adhikari and helped her return to Kathmandu on the same day's evening flight. She had purchased the ticket herself by paying Rs 10,784.
According to the embassy, Sambhavi Adhikari had contacted the embassy's hotline from the airport and informed that she was being delayed in going to Berlin and then returned to Nepal.
Nepal has formally sought an explanation from the Qatari mission regarding this incident. The Qatari side has assured to contact the airlines and understand the details.
