The number of foreign workers in Malaysia has decreased by 13 percent compared to last year. Malaysia has only partially recruited workers from source countries, including Nepal, since June 2024.
Deputy Minister of Human Resources Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad informed Parliament on Monday that the number of foreign workers is decreasing as of October 15. According to him, as of October 15, 2132,578 foreign workers are legally working in Malaysia. The number was 2452,100 during the same period last year. This year, there has been a decrease of 319,432.
The largest number of workers is currently employed in the industrial sector with 622,388 workers. This is followed by the construction sector with 589,684, the service sector with 390,607, the crop/plantation sector with 263,131, the agriculture sector with 158,628, domestic helpers with 177,375 and the mining and quarrying sector with 765.
Deputy Minister Mohamad said that the employment of foreign workers has long been limited to only six formal sectors. Including industry, construction, services, crops/plantations, agriculture, and mining and quarrying . The sub-sectors of these sectors also fall within the same limits .
Malaysia has also been reducing the quota of foreign workers . It had allocated a quota for foreign workers of 15 percent of the total workforce . It has now reduced it to 10 percent . The latest reduction has not been made public by country .
In the last fiscal year, 10,000 Nepali workers went to Malaysia with new work permits . 38,000 Nepali workers went with new work permits .
