Kathmandu's garbage collection is on the rise, Minister Ghisingh expresses commitment

After Urban Development Minister Kulman Ghising reached an agreement with the locals of the Bancharedanda landfill site area, the Kathmandu Valley's garbage collection has now begun.

The Kathmandu Valley has been plagued by foul smell due to garbage coming out of houses after the garbage disposal was obstructed. Minister Ghising had said that he was committed to meeting the demands of the locals soon. The minister had said that he would not only assure them but also implement them.

After the locals obstructed the garbage disposal, a team including Minister Ghising, Urban Development Secretary Gopal Sigdel, the Chief District Officers of Kathmandu, Nuwakot and Dhading, and the Executive Officer of Kathmandu Metropolitan City had reached the Bancharedanda landfill site to resolve the problem.

The team inspected the site and interacted with the mayor of Dhunibesi Municipality in Dhading, the chairman of Kakani Rural Municipality in Nuwakot, the ward chairman of the affected ward, and local residents.

Minister Ghisingh said that past agreements will be implemented and demands raised at the local level will be taken to a consensus in a friendly environment, not through repression. Demanding 15 days to move forward with the consensus implementation process, he requested not to obstruct waste disposal. ‘We will move forward with short-term and long-term plans for waste management, we will immediately move forward with work that can be done in the short term, we will make policy decisions to implement the agreements made in the past,’ he said.

A committee will also be formed to resolve the dispute. The committee will include Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Urban Development, affected local levels and residents. Similarly, lighting will also be arranged in the landfill area, said the minister’s press coordinator Sachen Gautam. Minister Ghisingh, promising to arrange the necessary lighting at the site for nighttime waste management, said that lighting will start from Monday. For this, he has instructed the NEA’s executive director and the head of the Nuwakot distribution center.

Earlier, locals protested and obstructed the disposal of garbage, saying that the 18-point agreement reached between the government and locals in 2079 was not implemented.
